a life creative
I won’t be back in the silver studio until the last weekend of February, as I’ll be embarking on three weekends of ‘safer’ printmaking during a series of workshops run by Printmaking Sisters Robin Ezra and Annie Day.
I attended the first of the three workshops this past weekend, and although printmaking is a process I haven’t been through since completing my Certificate of Fine Arts 17 years ago, I threw myself wholeheartedly into it, and I’ve come to the conclusion that it is quite an addictive art. I also love the fact that safer alternatives are used, instead of rosin and acids and other harsh traditional printmaking chemicals.
The first workshop explored waterless lithography.
An image is drawn on thin aluminium plates using a Omnichrom pencil, Sharpie texta, or crayon. The plate is then coated in a water repellent silicon and odourless solvent solution and cured in an oven for >20 minutes before washing away the medium with acetone. In this technique, the etching is made in the surface of this cured silicon base, not in the plate itself. Other mediums, such as the use of copha or floor polish, make for some interesting effects, and iron-on transfers allow for writing to be added into the artwork (the right way round!).
The volume and quality of work created by my fellow classmates was remarkable.
Below are my efforts.
Deer & Forest – plain
|Deer & Forest – each colour
etched and printed separately (4 plates)
Deer & Forest – lookin’ shifty!
Vinnie Cat – printed onto coloured paper
Flower – 2 plates printed over yellow ink background
Mr Fibonacci – 2 plates
