Firenze jewellery jaunt: wedding rings

Another Monday…in fact, a whole week has come and gone in the Renaissance city and I haven’t blogged – shock horror.

I had planned to write day by day but, aside from boring the pants off everyone, I find the prospect of posting every day pretty much a chore. After a hard day’s fiddling with silver and coming home at 9pm, I want a beer and a good book, or a wine and a film, or any combination thereof.

Rather than bore you with minutiae or quips about ubiquitous drunken foreign university students and their innate tours of Florentine gutters, here are the photos from the jewellery classes of last week.

The ‘scroll’ ring is just a play on embellishing an otherwise plain convex ring – more or less a practice. Scroll further down and you’ll see the beginnings of my wedding ring…

scrolls

Two domed disks, cut and curled.

Foreground: The convex ring ‘practice’; Background: Marco’s ring I made in Australia last year while we were visiting Ken Raffe.

Cleaned of firescale and ready to tumble.

Tumbled scroll embellished convex ring. I have a few further finishing design ideas for this one. To be continued…

Allcabachon+Bezel

Decisions, decisions…so I bought them all! They’ll all be put to good use. What are they? Tourmaline and moonstone (foreground). Gold bezel cannibalised, melted, (read: symbolically cathartically purged) from my old wedding ring.

…and the defining duo. This is the stone I’ve chosen for my wedding ring. Initially, I’d gone for the powder blue (the previous photo) but once in the bezel it lost its lustre. This, on the other hand, gains something from being nested in gold.

Ecco ci qua!

This is the ring itself (mine, that is. I’ll be making Marco’s in the coming couple of weeks). This is reticulated sterling silver (.925), which was annealed 14 times before reticulation. I love the lightning flower effect – certainly my favourite effect. Something very primal in the process.

I have another jewellery class or two up my sleeve for later in the week and just today I’ve begun the Printmaking Sisters’ course. Tomorrow morning, Florentine time, I’ll post what’s happening at Il Bisonte.
In the meantime, aside from keeping the Italian economy afloat [via handbags, boots, handmade sandals and sterling silver and precious stone supplies], I’m zipping along in my creative groove. I’ll be balancing it out with a little ‘hard’ work [and a mountain breather] in the enoteca back in Santa Fiora over the weekend.

Hi there Naomi, thank you so much and apologies for the late reply, I’ve been offline with the wedding and family, ecc. I really enjoyed the course and look forward to catching up in the future 🙂
